Newer inventions such as the Google Glass and the introduction of smart watches are an evolutionary step in the right direction. Newer products such as smartphones are much powerful than many computers that were introduced into the market 2 to 3 years ago. As time progresses, the technology we see before us is the climbing the ladder everyday. The progress in technology is allowing us to be connected to world wide web at all times.
As wel all know, for every new invention or product that is introduced into the world, there are pros and cons that should be addressed. Companies will look into this to see if the product they are planning to introduce is feasible or worth the investment. Recently in Seattle at a cafe, a customer was asked to leave since he was wearing the Google Glass. The restaurant felt that wearing the Google Glass makes others feel uncomfortable and feel that we are disreprecting our customers. As this new technology becomes more readily available, new laws will have to be put in place to protect the rights of citizens.
As we know today, the world is more connected than it has ever been. As a result of this, our personal privacy has been compromised. Many countries are putting more efforts to prevent and protect their country from being attacked. There are many pieces or documents that one can feel should be private. Personally, I feel your spending history or habits should be protected. For example, as shown in class, Major retail outlets printing coupons based on the items you purchased previously. In technical terms, this is still legal since there is no piece of information in the constitution that protects privacy. Is this an ethical business tactic? The answer for this question can be easily justified. One other form of privacy is the government being allowed to tap into your phone and listen to who you are talking to. This is clearly a violation of your privacy.
Through the inventions of social media, today your personal information is being used without your knowledge. There should be a line drawn to prevent corporations and major businesses from being allowed to use it for their benefit. As we know in today’s world, this is very difficult to enforce as there is no clear cut statement in the constitution that protects your privacy.
Downloading content from the World Wide Web is technically. Although we all have committed this act in our lives it is still considered a crime. In today’s digitalized world, there are act or laws that have been put in place to restrict illegal downloading. For example, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, clearly states that that the distribution of copyright materials is punishable by law. This means that if you download music or movies online, you can be dealt with some severe penalties. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) are constantly keeping track of downloads and websites that are infringe upon the copyright laws.
Downloading content illegally is the same as stealing a new album from your local Wal-Mart. For example, if you have to pay for downloading Jay-z’s new album, using an illegal source and downloading it is considered a violation of the copyright laws put in place. Therefore it is illegal and considered illegal since it is literally the same exact thing as taking stealing a CD.
My major here at the University of Albany is Information Science. My major can relate with other areas of study to make a connection between them. These can include areas of the health field. For example EHR, otherwise known as Electronic Health Records collect information about patients in a digital format. As being a Information Science major, having the technoligical background will allow you apply it to certain fields. This is one of the reasons why I choose this major.
As we all are aware, today computers play a role in everything. Pertaining to my major, computers will play a bigger role than many others. It can vary from developing software or troubleshooting. In some careers, you may be asked to develop customer support by satisfying their needs. For example, a product manager will work with the engineering team to develop the best output in an efficient manner. This all work through the use of computing and having good technological skills.
